A Brief History of Bonny Kingdom

Dating back to the 11th Century, Bonny Kingdom boasts a long history as a hub for international trade and cultural exchange. Situated in a resource-rich island spanning approximately 215 square kilometres located in the South of Nigeria. Located at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean facing the Bight of Bonny sits the Island of Bonny. This serene community has several historical and economic symbolism for the Nigerian federation.

There are several cultural groups and festivals in Bonny Kingdom—the “Nwaotam” and “Boat Regatta” carnival display, for instance, which are renowned and colourful displays among men and women, young and old of the Bonny community. Other cultural groups are also known in the communities which perform at various times in the year usually during the Christmas period.

Bonny Island has been a vibrant hub of economic activity since the 11th century, marked by the arrival of the Portuguese. The Island Kingdom forged strong ties with Portugal during this period, even sending its first ambassador, the Aboriginal Prince Abagy, to Portugal around 1450 AD. In the 19th century, Bonny Island emerged as the first point of contact for Christianity in West Africa. It is also the birthplace of many distinguished sons and daughters of Nigeria. With its rich traditions and cultural heritage, Bonny Island stands out as one of Nigeria’s leading communities. Since 1996, the Grand Bonny Kingdom has been guided by the insightful and dynamic leadership of His Majesty King Edward Asimini William Dappa Pepple III, CON, Perekule XI Amanyanabo, the natural ruler of the Grand Bonny Kingdom in Rivers State, Nigeria.

Bonny’s traditional institution is headed by King Edward William Asimini Dappa Pepple III, Perekule XI, who serves as the Amanyanabo (King or natural ruler).
